Nick.. You need to learn to bite your tongue.. The model isn't up for c&c here.. she is in fact a friend.
You and your mrs must be princesses.

Nov 13 2008, 08:35 PM
My apologies Kyle, I didn't think about what I was saying nor did I know the model was a friend. To be 100% honest, I was stating the truth, brashly I'll admit and I can see perhaps may be due to large hear and open mouth. I sure am a princess, i even wear a tiara in the shower.
7OXIN, I'm not hating - I'm commenting, I guess I'm one of those people who tells the truth however harsh it may feel. If I hated I wouldn't even be looking in this thread, I was merely making a point at something that seemed very striking to me albeit rather abrupt and to the point. Perhaps it's only me who see's this, not of consequence. There is no ill intent towards Kyle and definitely none towards the model who is braver than I, as you wouldn't catch me modeling for anyone or anything. I'm on the other end of a camera for a reason.
Casey, judgmental would be saying, geez she looks like... an alcoholic because she's wearing orange, I shall believe she's an alcoholic. As above, I was merely stating something that was very striking to me albeit rather abrupt and to the point.
And lets move on.
Kyle, did you purchase more rx units? I noticed you said you used 580's and two Elinchrom studio strobes, I assume that is 4 lights in total?

Well there's a couple of contradictions right there.
What does it matter if the model was a friend or not, it was a totally useless statement. It offered no critique on the image and no useful comments on why you thought that result was obtained.
Aside from that, swearing in threads like that is certain judge of character.

I don't think vocabulary would ever be a reputable window into ones character, after all, our politicians speak well but are forever negating to omit the truth. Also, this is the internet - who is really "themselves" on OR off it?
In meaning I don't think about what I say - What I think is what I say, I'm not one for censorship, If I say that can is blue, that's what I think.
Adam, you all know my posts are 99% useless comments anyway. I was merely trying to tell Kyle I was sorry, and that means honestly sorry and it was a rude thing to say without consideration or thought of consequence.
and speaking of useless statements, why is everyone else joining the bandwagon? Isn't your post technically a useless statement if it isn't pertinent to the photos? I'm going on holidays, back in 3 weeks, later.

And even when viewed up close they are 100% accurate.. not dodgy fake shit.

Apologies for quoting these images, but it's the easiest way to give some feedback. I usually don't give detailed c&c unless I'm asked to, but I've really appreciated Kyle's honest feedback and thought I'd return the favour. Cheers
I like the choice in background for this front on shot but I don't like the way the garage door intersects with the lines of the car in this one. It makes the composition feel too tight.

I do like hard lighting, but the hard lighting in this one makes "sparco" difficult to read, would have been better to bounce the flash off the cars roof.

The lighting is pretty good in this one but the composition makes me feel uneasy. It looksas if the car is going to fall off the screen. Just a bit too much angle.

Like a few other photos in this set, this one is about 1/2 stop underexposed.

Nice work on the lighting in this one, I think it's the strongest in the set.

all of the different background elements are distracting in this one

the uneven spacing on either side of the car really huts the composition

1d3, 85 1.2 @ 6.4, iso200, 1/125
Used a pair of elinchrom monoblock's one with a 90x90 box and the other bare as rear fill at 1/4 ratio from main light.
Very happy with the results!!

As for comments, I thought I'd post my comments here as not everyone on the interwebs know's i'm dumb but everyone here sure does.
Mate do you use Stofen (or other brand) of diffuser on your strobes? Was thinking about how you mentioned the hotspots and those little cheap guys help cut that out a bit - but of course will kill the flash power. I've got one coming for the SB-25 to play with. First shot on blog is killer.

Nah I don't.. the 580ex's have inbuilt bounce cards but I rarely use that either.. I had a omnibounce and sold it

I foudn that i used the gary fong thing more.. and I don't even use that now haha
Reason for not using it at the drags is it's designed to spread the flash wider for closer distance to subject scenes, won't make any difference for the distance my flashes are travelling
Not a bad idea though !!

Yeah was just thinking about softening it a little as everyone knows straight strobes are harsh but i guess you know what you're doing!

Dec 17 2008, 09:22 PM
All a stofen omnibounce does is widen the flash's angle of coverage, it won't actually give you a softer light when shooting direct flash.
The reason for this is because the stofen size is exactly the same size as the flash itself (ok it's a tiny little bit bigger).
In order to get a softer light you need to increase the size of your light, so say a shoot through umbrella or softbox.
Here's a perfect example

Say that's a handy little page. My ebay diffuser reckons it reduces the power of direct flash by up to 1/3rd of a stop (more power, less reduction but that could be from merely having to go through the plastic) and it also bounces the light so perhaps they just tried to make a stofen-like omnibounce product, made the plastic too thick and called it a diffuser instead and made it out like some sort of flash speader.. oh well $8.. Still got my STU's anyway if i want to use them.
Hey kyle, throw on some umbrellas at the track!! and watch your 580's float like mary poppins
