what speaker setup do you think is best for utes? i have two 4" and two 6x9s at the moment and will be adding a sub to it. should i get rid of the 4s or 6x9s nd put 6"? nd shuld the speakers be set up on amps?
Protius
Get rid of your current speakers and get some good quality splits, a small sub and a 4 channel bridgeable amp. That way you can amp the speakers and use the other 2 channels bridged for the sub.

If you're getting a sub, it's time to say goodbye to the 6x9s. They're meant to be used as an alternative to a subwoofer, not with one.

I agree with Protius though, ditch all four and buy a good quality set of 6.5" splits. Good quality DOESN'T mean from places like JB Hifi, Strathfield, WoW, Autobarn etc - visit your local car audio specialist store, bring some cds and audition what they have.

You could survive running them off the headunit, best sound will come from amping them to let them use their full potential. Best option would be a monoblock and 2 channel, but being a ute a 4 channel would be suitable enough.

cheers for ur opinions guys. wat kinds of brands do u think r good quality?
Talin A.k.A TAZMC
Focal
Alpine
etc.

Depends how much $$ you have

Personally - anything that isn't from JB, Strathfield, Supercheap, WOW, Ebay etc - apart from mid to high end Pioneer headunits - that INCLUDES all Alpine Type E gear, that's just cheap crap, Type S/R/X are fairly decent.

Personally for speakers I like Focal, MB Quart, Boston Acoustics and the Jaycar Kevlar 6.5" splits

For subs, Digital Designs, JL Audio, Eclipse, Boston...

For amps, I'll never pass up Jaycar Precision Response in bang for your buck.

The list is endless really, but the quality gear comes from a reputable specialist store

Whereabouts do you live?

Rookie ROX
If you've got it already, no point not using it for the moment.

http://www.webaudiodirect.com.au - Then drop into the nearest store (Albert's Car Stereo) - I can vouch for Bruce at Myaree anyway - They have a lot more instore range of products that they don't have rights to sell online

RR, i know this may not be the place for it, but i find your view on the above-mentioned Car audio stores quite narrow-minded..

To say that "good quality" gear is simply not available from these stores is complete and utter garbage.

For example: Available from your local JB are -
-All Alpine Type S and R products which you yourself mention as "fairly decent". And also V-Power and V12 Amps
-JL Audio VR and ZR series spilts, not to mention the W series of Subs and the Slash amps. Some of THE best gear on the market.
-Kicker SS and RS Splits, the SS were rated 2nd best split system under $1000 only beaten by the Morel's by Car Audio Australia Magazine.
-And then theres the fitters, some of the best in Australia are working for these companies, fair enough some are better than others, but that can be determined by simply asking around.

Fair enough it may be your view on things, i do agree that between JB, Strathfield, Supercheap, WOW, Ebay etc there are ones i would and would not shop at for certain things, but please don't impose this view on others, making expensive "designer" brands and boutique specialist stores seem the ONLY option, because its simply not the case.

And guess what, because of the above, we now have Type E gear in Australia. Woo. Do some research on the reputation levels that Alpine has in the States. smile.gif

A majority of the above listed brands have only recently found their way into those stores. And I will never recommend someone go and visit a store whose "specialist staff" know jack all about car audio, and simply want to sell you the most expensive item in the store. There's only one chain store in SEQ I'd recommend, that being Autobarn Slacks Creek, only because it's 'specialist' just so happens to be our very own DD Barina/Civic/Michael. Let's not go into the 'quality' of installs carried out by most of these stores.

Funnily enough, too many people think that gear is only available from chain stores. Go and search through my posts and find how many people have responded to my suggestion of visiting a car audio specialist store as chain stores. I also have a nice account on MEA, try that one as well.

I list my advice from experience. When I walk into Northfield Moorooka, I go in knowing that they care about keeping me happy, and if that's simply answering some questions or giving advice, I know they'll happily give it to me and let me walk out that door without suggesting I buy something. I can't walk into a chain store and the car audio section without being badgered or actually get advice, just recommedations on what I should buy, regardless of whether it's what I want or not.

But hey, what do I know, I'm only a customer, I don't work for JB HiFi smile.gif
