Due to the responses, I'll lay this to rest. Ever hear the RTA adverts on the radio about watching out for drunk pedestrians at night? Yeah. Crossing against the lights, I swerved, his mate stopped but he tried to run across. Ended up smashing into my guard, falling forward, and the windscreen cleaned him up. He passed away approx. 10 minutes after they got him to hospital. It was a pretty messed up night.
The police were excellent and everyone was on the scene in under 2 minutes. I have around 15 witnesses saying the same thing. He ran, I swerved, and there was not much else I could do. That was around 3 weeks ago now. The windscreen is fixed, but the side mirror is still off. This could take the rest of the year to clear up, and anywhere up to a few years before I'm called to attend the coroners inquest.
If anything this has made me a much better and safer driver, even more so than I was before, but what a way to do it. I really hope none of you guys ever have to go through this yourselves.
To clarify: I hadn't had a single drop of booze, no drugs in my system and I was not speeding. It was just a stupid accident. I did my best to avoid him, but it turned out there wasn't much else I could do. I just hope his family is coping ok with everything.
