some more info
APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG
The APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG is the world’s first Ultra-Telephoto Zoom Lens that offers a fast aperture of F2.8 at 500mm focal length. It covers the widely used 200 to 500mm focal length range, and maintains its fast F2.8 aperture over the entire zoom range. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range.
Shooting distance and focal length can be viewed on the lens’ LCD panel, which is an additional convenience for the photographer.
A filter can be inserted towards the rear of the lens, and a circular polarizing filter can be used with its ingenious rotation mechanism.
A dedicated APO TELE CONVERTER 2x EX DG II is supplied as a standard accessory with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG.
Its exclusive design minimises image degradation usually associated with teleconverters. When this dedicated teleconverter is used with the APO 200-500mm F2.8 EX DG lens, it becomes a large aperture 400-1000mm F5.6 AF Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens.

Jesus fucking crist.
Here I was thinking a 600 f/4 would be the shit. Thats intense.
With canon ending production on the 600mm f/4, wonder what the will come up with to counter this lens...

now imaging it with a 2x extender... 400-1000mm F5.6 (taking into account the usual loss of 2 f stops extenders incur)
I'm going to take a rough stab in the dark and guess it's price tag is somewhere in the 3000-5000 price range

If your price guess mattson could be the real pricing..that's hell of a steal i'd say.
I'd use it for drifting...

with the 2x converter 400-1000 mm indeed... but remember on a canon crop body for instance that equates to 640-1600mm
Holy crap!

Jun 13 2007, 08:03 PM
why o why would u need it

Jun 13 2007, 08:57 PM

Why does anyone need a 1000hp car?
Lance
Jun 13 2007, 10:03 PM
I would rather buy the canon 800mm even thou its 100x the price, lol.

Jun 13 2007, 10:57 PM
Thats insanity.
I would need a tripod for your camera and your lens.
Thats honestly nuts. Does anybody actually know just how far you could zoom in with this lens (in terms of meters, or in this case kilometers? :| )

Jun 13 2007, 11:08 PM
Well, without the 2xteleconverter, its still only a 500mm lens.
This shot is with a 500mm (on a Canon 30D 1.6 crop body) I guess the track was maybe 30 - 50 meters away? Dunno really... not a huge distance.

The reason it is so large is cos its constant 2.8
The lens I shot that with was a Sigma 50-500mm which is hefty but not near as big (its only 6.3 at 500mm)

Bear in mind this lens extends as you zoom in.

mmm, the 50-500 is a fair old biatch of a thing to use, 500mm is a long, long lens with a crop factor of 1.5/1.6x. I would hate to go past 600mm, it would be soooo awkward!

Jun 14 2007, 09:28 AM
constant 2.8 at 500mm! WOW thats farkin awesome, comes with tele convertor also!, anyone got a price hahahaha, id be guessing more than 5k myself. Im a fan of Digital Sigma lens's
azenis
Jun 14 2007, 09:48 AM
If you have to ask you cant afford it. It would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than 5k... way way more.
Just found out it weighs 14kg
Fisher
Jun 14 2007, 10:43 AM
It would be more like $40,000. For $5k you can even cover a 300mm f/2.8 prime

yeah like the canon 800mm or 1200mm
Fisher
Jun 17 2007, 02:04 AM
Yeah but they are all primes. This is the biggest Zoom lens available. Versatility is the key here.
TD 06
Jun 17 2007, 01:48 PM
there are much much bigger zooms, but with smaller apertures though such as 6.3
Fisher
Jun 18 2007, 12:37 AM
