well hello all, im very new to the world of photography, and i'm searching for a digital slr, something thats forgiving to a begginer, but can still take some awesome shots, my price range pretty much goes to about $1500. i've seen some stuff fairly cheap on ebay and such. But thought i'd get your opinions first before i make any commitments. is 10mp the way to go? or can you get awsay with stuff like the pentax ist D which is only 6.2? i'd like something with some various lens's being readily available...
the sony a100 seems great, my friend has one and it seems to do some amazing stuff.
anyway....
help a noob! lol
cheers guys, im keen to start shooting asap!

Well canon and Nikon both have great entry level cameras. Do you want to upgrade the lenses? Do you want to eventually spend money on it, etc etc?

Canon 400D is an excellent entry level camera and you can get them from here for $1499

http://www.photocontinental.com.au/ishop/s...em/101090501700

Nikon D40 is also another entry level camera at the price of $1299 on this website not a bad price....

http://www.photocontinental.com.au/ishop/s...em/101190505610

Just remember the D40 is 6.1mp, where as the 400D is 10.1mp

What ever you think will suit you better go for it. Best idea is to go to a place and get a feel for the camera, hold it, use it, play with settings to see what suits you better smile.gif

Hope this helps you,
Lance

yes agreed with lance, 400d twin lens kit, and a fairly big cf card, you will go fine, maybe grab yourself a tripod aswell. Although the 400d is quite small, a Nikon d40 would be great, grab one with a twin lens kit thumbsup.gif

After a discussion with a member on the weekend, i would rather lots of small sized cards than one large one, incase of data failure. smile.gif

If I can take pics with one, anyone can!

D40 u mean?

Either a D40 or 400d which ever suits you best. Unless you need the 10 megapixels instead of 6 i would go for the d40 it is a bit cheaper, it takes cheaper SD cards to. Go to http://www.dpreview.com and read about each camera and see what u like.

for $1500 you could get d40 twin lense, memory card, tripod, bag.

Just to set the record straight, the D80 is NOT 6.1mp, it is 10.2!! I should know, I have one!
Buy a Nikon!!
I know this is a cannon orientated sight, but can u really say that the D80 is not better than the 400D. It just is.
It is better weighted, better battery, tougher, nicer ergonomics and has a lens kit which craps all over the 400d!

If u buy a canon u'll regret it until u get the 30D, all the lower end ones are nowhere near as good as the low end Nikons.
Most of all though. DONT BUY PENTAX OR OLYMPUS!! You'll defintatley regret that.

Just read the comparisons between the D80 and the 400D in magazines etc. (there are a few dodgy ones on the net).

Sorry was a typo, i ment D40.

for once i actually agree with lance i only use 1 or 2 gig cards... nothing worse than loosing or a card faluire chances of it happening to all ur cards is not as high as it is on one card....

it does happen i use sandisk ultra or extreme and had a falure all cards do but just cover ur ass

it's obvious lance ment the d40 is 6.1MP, as it was one of the cameras had said to get.

no one said that the d80 wasn't better, it is out of sinner's price range anyway.

he right on the front of the 30d. my mate has a 350d and the 30d shits all over it. canon and nikon should be ur first 2 choices.

i was in the same boat not long ago i was gunna get the 350d (400d wasnt released at that point) but i bit the bullet and saved and extra $500 and got a 30d with 3yrs extended warranty for $2060 but more recently a workmate picked up a 30d enthusiast kit with battery grip (very handy) extra battery and a lens for $2200.

my advice is if u wana keep at photography take ur time pick whats best for u. and think about the cameras one level up (30d not sure what the nikon equivalent is) its worth ur while.
--sinner--
hmmm maybe it would be worth my while to save up that extra 500 or so by the sounds of things. thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated smile.gif

Nikon equivalent is the D80, D80 is about $300 cheaper.
