Ok First I would suggest buying a second rocker cover so you can take your time with it.

Step 1: Paint strip your rocker cover back if you have paint on it (either factory or Aftermarket)

I did not need to do this as the rocker cover I bought was bare aluminum anyway.

Step 2: Give the rocker cover a good sand with suitable wet and dry sand paper

Step 3: Mask off the 2 Oil Lines and Oil Cap on the rocker cover.

Step 4: Find a suitable paint, make sure you buy some High Temperature paint. I got some VHT paint (wrinkle red). Costs around $12.


Step 5: Find a suitable area to begin spraying the cover. Then start Spraying it. You should give it one Thick Coat to begin with.


Step 6: Spray another 2 lighter coats on.

Step 7: Allow to dry for 10 minutes then get a Heat gun to help cure the paint, With the wrinkle red paint u need to do this to make it wrinkly. Do this for a good 15 – 20 minutes.


Step 8: Allow it to dry for at least 12hrs.


Step 9: Your ready to sand back the Nissan & Twincam 16 valve logos. To do this get some fine Wet and dry paper and slowly do this, try to only sand the logos and not the cover!

Step 10: Take off the tape on the Oil lines.


And your ready to mount it on the car!!

You will need some liquid gasket for the rocker cover gasket, when u install it on the car.

Question Chuong - how long did it take you to sand those bloody logos/words? I've come to the conclusion that Hi-Temp paint sucks, and I'm sick of bloody sanding but can't find an easier way, especially seeing as it's solvent resistant

I got a small block of wood and got the sand paper out and wrapped it around it and went away sanding off the nissan and twin cam bits carefully

Hmmm...the ease of a 4cyl, only one cover and it's flat. I've been avoiding going back to it simply because it's pissing me off, I just don't have the patience to sit and sand and sand and sand. Then repeat process with finer grit to get it all beautiful.

Anyway...I'll get there...eventually..

if you dont want to sand the words as its a pain in the ass, then each time you do a coat of paint carefully rub the letters with thinners on a rag.

Meh - I gave up and resprayed it all again

It's a pain in the ass when the paint your using is solvent resistant so it takes off jack all when you try, looks fine like it is...*shrugs*

cover the letters with masking tape, put the tape over the letters and trace it out with a stanly knife, saves sanding it

another way to do the letters is to put vasoline over the letters and then paint the cover...once it's dry just wipe over the letters and the vasoline with the paint will come off...easier than sanding.

Autobarn, Repco, Aussie Auto, Auto1, my local Super Cheap doesn't carry it though.

There's a few different brands, but just make sure it's a High Temperature paint, Brake Caliper paint will also work, although it's usually not the same wrinkle style paint.

just did this yesterday as i was bored and sick of my covers being plain old red with no polished letters i used the sand paper method but if i knew that vasoline does the job i wouldve done it that way.

i preferred it glossy in the first pic. nice tho im goin to do my cover wen it gets bak from repairs

if u want to sand the letters just get a electric sander n quickly swipe across the top of them

I did my S/S intercooler piping on my ute in the Black Wrinkle paint, looks almost factory fitted now Engine bay heats was all that was needed to get it to wrinkle, not heat gun required

The VHT wrinkle paint is a semi-ceramic type material so it should reduce heat transfer... possibly. It would not increase heat transfer though so there is no 'loss' in using it.

Just go mild steel cooler pipes and HPC coating

ive done a few rocker covers and used a flat blade(razor)and just scrape backwards and forwards in a motion like youd hold a bog card against a small dent repair and its worked well.go blunt quick when your going through crinkle coat though.

did mine recently... shaved all the letterings off as well...
