A Bathurst-based motorsport promotions company is determined to revive the 24-Hour race at Mount Panorama.
Although negotiations between Mount Panorama Automobile Co-Op Ltd and Bathurst Regional Council to stage the event in 2006 have broken down, the group still believes there is potential to successfully stage a second event at the famous circuit.
According to MPAC chairman and spokesperson Craig Lucas the company, founded by a group of local, state and insterstate businessmen, has been in detailed discussions with council.
"Our aim was to stage the event early in 2006 and while our negotiations with the BRC have not yet reached fruition, we are determined to ultimately achieve our aim - that is, to have those magnificent GT sports cars howling through the night across the top of the mountain at Bathurst," Mr Lucas said.
"The founding purpose of MPAC is to host a 24-hour endurance motor race organised around a festival of motor sport, giving the whole event a much broader base than just a 24-hour race, although we believe that in itself has a sufficient 'magic' about it."
Mr Lucas said while council had not approved the track use for the MPAC proposal at this stage, planning for the event is still proceeding with regulations, in part structured around those used by the Nurburgring 24-hour race, being developed.
He said there was a growing trend around the world towards endurance racing and this was highlighted by the emergence of the Silverstone 24-hour and the Dubai 24-hour which will soon join the existing established endurance races.
"Bathurst is a must amongst these events. The track is perfect for a 24-hour race and, as the number of these events grows, we envisage it becoming one of the highlights of a possible World Endurance Series," Mr Lucas said.
Mr Lucas said the MPAC proposal for the Bathurst 24-Hour Festival of Motor Sport envisages bringing together a wide range of motor sport interests, including support racing categories from historics, sports car, Formula Ford and Formula Vee, plus car clubs and similar interest groups.
"We believe the success of an event such as this involves it having a wide base of appeal to the community and involving motor racing fans and the local community," he said.
MPAC's plans include a wide range of cultural and community events around the race weekend.
"It is very much MPAC's objective to deliver, not just for one year or two, a sustainable, year-on-year, second international event, a 24-hour motor race, at Mount Panorama."
