hey, i have recently bought a pretty strait 1966 HR holden premier, it is all original right down to the 2spd auto, my delema is the interior at the moment, its kinda orginal and i kinda wanna keep that theme running but still wanna change some stuff in it, can anyone give me ideas for it? i have kicker 5" splits and i have no where to fit them, there isnt any room anywhere, the doors have metal behind them in the only place that would work, need help, anyone with pics of their HR would be the best... thanks
warney
make up boxes up and put them in that mount them to under the dash you will be happy with the sound, now i cant member what the parcel shelf is like in them , but ya prolly can remove it though and make ya self a new shelf with splits/ 6x9's in it ! so ya can re-fit the parcel shelf once ya selling the car again !

Don't go cutting big holes into the steel of the parcel shelf!! If you cut in the wrong place, and take out where the child restraint would need to go if you have a kid, then you're as good as stuffed!

Unfortunately the old cars of this era weren't designed with stereo's in mind - back then an old AM Radio with a couple of crackly speakers under the dash was cutting edge technology! tongue.gif

yer but this doesnt exactly solve my problem, im putting 5"splits in the front, but i cant find anywhere to put them. i thought the doors but there is too much metal behind them, i dont want to cut into that without being sure there isnt another spot

I'm surprised it hasn't already been mentioned

If you want speakers on the doors, it looks like your only option would be to either buy premade (not really recommended) or have door pods custom made for the car. It's obviously going to cost you something, but when done well would allow you to have speakers in the doors, plus it should look good.

I'll recommend now going and having a chat to someone at a car audio specialist store. You don't have to buy anything or have anything done, but go in, tell them your dilema, ask if they'll look at your car and suggest what they would do. A good company should happily do that - plus if they're luckily you'll come back because you like their plan! wink.gif

Whereabouts are you? We can recommend stores if we know that! smile.gif

The best place to mount them is in the kick panels (you know what these are?) the ones i had were screwed, so i got some replacement mateiral, and cut out a new kickpanel (using the old wrecked one as a template).. and then cut 6inch holes in them to puts my speakers

cutting into the rear parcel shelf is illigal (i believe) and shouldnt be done... BUUUUT i did, and again, the rear parecel shelf was also fcuked and i did the same as i did for the kick panels... then with a air-oxy gun thing (cutting tool) i cut the holes for the 69s to fit into. Dont use a grider or something that shoots sparks, cause it will shit up your windows (or just cover up the WHOLE back window with un-flamble material)

For the head unit, i took out the stock AM (YEH!) p.o.s. and made the hole bigger.. and for sucurity, i made a custom metal box around it, and mounted it with brakcets.

EASY-AS, just make sure that your car is water proof first. Also, if installing amps/subs, get the alternator checked/refurbished or get a newer more powerful one

ALL that didnt cost shiet, like $50 for the (i think it was thick cardbord type stuff, or plywood, or thin mdf... can't remeber.) You could use the ones you have now, but you said u dont want to reck them. Also, it is possible to mount them in the doors, but your door trims will be sacrificed. Im sure you wouldnt loose too much value if you put the speakers in there.

Ok, to do that... take the door trims off, wind the windows down. Just check to see how far the windows go down, if they go down too far, then the speaker wont get in there... if there is room, then check the depth of the door (and also check for water in the door, and rust too.. if there is then forget about putting the speakers in there, and spray some fish oil in there too)... yeh ummm, then, cut into the metal (if there isnt already a hole there, if there is then you will have to make some custom brackets to mount kinda between the door and the speakers)
Cut into the metal, big enogh to fit the speaker (same as cutting into the parcel chelf) then using the template, cut the speaker hole into the trim, in the same place as the hole in the door.
For the wires, you will most prob have to drill a hole in the side of the door (where the hingers are) and just cabel tie the wires along there, and just head them towards the floor and run them (the wires) under the carpet.

I think that just about does it... ummm PM for more info questions or shiet...
*oh yeh, i did that in my EJ

Before you consider doing any of that.

Cutting any metal in your doors is classed as illegal as your ruining the structual integrity of the car, making it "less safe" in an accident.

Although I don't see why it would be illegal to cut into the parcel tray - unless of course it provides structual importance to the car.

Again I'll recommend having pods made to go over the door panels. Even if you don't have the money at the moment, speak to the guys at the local car audio specialist stores (not Autobarn, JB or Strathfield) and find out what they'd do.

hmmm, well it seems as tho that anything you do to a car is illigal these days, like putting a 202 in your EJ etc... pffft.

anyways, cutting into the parcel shelf (and by that i mean the metal) is illagal, as it also ruins strucatual thingys.

Pods would be a quick fix, cuase imo they look like crap.

Well, you could atleast take off the door trims too see whats behind there, casue these doors are full of holes anyways, might find a way to put em in there somehow with bracekts and watevs..

pics of your car? Is it atleast lowered... even on stock wheels/tires/hubcaps, they look alirte, just get some torana rims for it and you will be sweet

I have done a few of these neatly. new kickpanels solves it. dash is up to you. my pick is to leave the stock AM unit IN THE DASH and put the radio elsewhere. its a classic car - leave it that way.
gnarlynick11
yeh if classic i s what your after hide the head unit eg glove box and leave am radio
i cut parcel shelf in my hg and fitted 6x9s
these cars might be painful but the sound is great in them
who will deem your speakers to be illegally placed mine have never been looked at by police or rta or to pass rego??
gnarlynick11
kick panels for speakers are way to go there plenty of room behind them well there is in my hg
