Hi guys I have puchased soem hell nice kicker subs recently and i am purchasing a higher quality battery than the kmart battery currently in my holden vs v6 commodore wagon. I was just wondering about getting it hooked up to the alternator in it i talked to a very profesional guy on holdens he seemed to think its fine and he even said his running a more poweful system on a less powerful battery and car. what do you guys think? and you reckon Jb Hi fi will charge me alot to get it all done? what have been your experiences? some of its hooked up with the cd player working on radio starting up and running the stock speakers..... so it should be fine we run most of the wiring downt he side skirts already so its more than half done........
cheers Tom

I run 4 12" Poioneer subs and 2 1100 watt amps on just a standard battery... it dosent make a difference it just helps having a better one if your going to krank it up a lot when the car is turned off... When the car is off it will drain power... But if you use it when the car is on it will charge as it goes down.
So it really depends on how often you are going to use the system with the car off

As for the setup, Personally i do all mine and my friends cars myself but thats because i have a great experience in cars and electronics, So if you arnt any good at it then i stronglly suggest you get a pro to do it, Because i bad connection or an earth out or a wire corssover and it can be the end of your head unit and amp... Its not somthing to fu*k with

thanks shadow well the headunit seemed to work fine!!!! other night jus have get Jb hi fi guy quote me on rest installing it...... eg hooking wiring through to car battery.... and just double checking on wiring in cd player though last time i drove home it was fine. I baughta extreme battery hgihest suggested one the commodore can take.

had an engine glitch after install where car shut down after trying start again to move it in in the driveway abit more then made that choke noise on engine tehn power out.. and died for a sec..... M<y dad seems to think it was jus a glitch or something to do with leaving the wiring disconnected from teh air conditioning in console. or just simple feedback coz of that electrical clicking noise coming from the enginebay or dash or console area around there... which got faster then stopped.
i seem to aggree with him....
apart from that been fine the stock speakers handle the head unit alright. though the back ones are crackling a little.
Im going to get a quote from Jb Hi fi. Do you suggest them i herd strathfield isnt worth it there a rip off. my mechniac suggested get a better alternator coz the car could go dead if that blows coz the battery will drain..... THOUGH my mum asked him taht without my being there and didnt tell him the specs on the amp and subs.
300watt rms on kicker subbies they pump so hard!

and 4 channels rms 110watt....shood be aight ey?

There alternator is a lot of bull shit, Yes it will help because yes it is a bad thing for it to get lack of power but i personally wouldent go buying a new one just beucase of the system. Maybe if you had a BIG pwerfull system in there then maybe but a couple of small 300watt subs and and amp arnt going to do that much. But once again like i said it all depends on how your going to use it... If you sue it when the cars on then its fine but if your the kinda person that uses your system a lot when the car isent running then you may want to consider it.
I run 4 12" Pioneer 800watt subs and 2 1100watt amps on my standard battery and alternator without problems but just keed your battery power in mind when you want to krank up your system.
As for the electrical break and the car stalling, That deffenentlly would happen if you have a possitive and a neggative touching or one of them going to an earth (eg steal), I STRONGLLY recommend that you get the ENTIRE system installed before you ever turn your cd player on or even start the car. ANY crossing wires will do damage to your system.

i dunno what the stock alternator on my car is, but it is really bodge. My dads got an 80watt alt somewhere that where gunna fit to it, along with an extra battery for the stereo in the boot. Optima yellow top..
Reason for upgrade of alt mainly cause i would be charging two batterys. And atm my battery can go flat while im driving and playing music. Im getting somone else to do most of the work for me, as i, nor my dad, have much idea about elec.

woah whats your ride? ive been told my holden vs alternator should beable to handle it easily...... plus i got an extreme battery for the job.... so that should help a little extra..... try Jb never go to Strathfield they are a rip off...

if you arent going to upgrade the alt. DEFINATELY get a 1 farad capacitor... they way you have a steady currant (even with it cranked) and it wont draw on your battery too much...
upping the size of your battery does jack-shit...

thanks moe002

embarrass me in front of the guys shuks!!!!! whee can i get one of these capacitors and what do they do where do they fit on in the car? explain

maybee the Jb Hi fi guys will tell me i need a capacitor first.... or a alternator though it shouldt need that much power although then again these subs at a hell nice 300 watts rms pump great especially on techno the higher rms i was told the worse it is on fast techno so opted for these and when listeneed the higher ones they were actualy better for holding Rnb beats but anyways back to this.... yer

from what ive heard capacitors dont do jack, but some others sware by them. Just park your car near a wall (or flat object in front of your car.. garage door) at nite, lights on.. pump your music... do your lights dim to the beat/bass? now, with the music off, lights on, car on... turn ur car off, do ur lights dim slightly or do they brighten up
ok now ive lost the morel of the story.. but if your lighhts like... get brighter when u turn ur car off (there fore, alternator not running, lights running of battery alone) then that means that your alternator isnt powerful enough...
maybe that only works the otherway around like if they dim, that means the battery aint powerful enough
did i just confuse the shieat outta everyone?

sorry man... i didnt mean to emabarress you dude...
caps just hold power... simple as that!!! doesnt drain off of your battery so much... also, they give the amps a constant even supply of power so you dont have a 'surging' type of sound!!!
sorry again man, i didnt mean to sound like an ass...
but in all seriousness, going the CAP route is well worth it... best value for money would be Jaycars 1 Farad Response Cap... $89 and you can definately notice the difference!!!
PM me man if you want some more help!!! more than happy to... : )

yeh well i dunno... i did it awhile ago... ill get back to ya when i get home, i think i remember the site that the test was on.
I dont think a cap would do much if you upradged to a 120 alter and better battery or dual battery, but for $90 you cant go wrong

found it for you...
http://www.bcae1.com/charging.htm*quote
If you want to see if your alternator is producing current, turn on your headlights when you're parked and the engine idling with the headlights shining on a wall (at night). Notice how bright they are. Then turn the engine off. The lights should get dimmer when you turn the engine off. If the lights get brighter when you kill the engine, the alternator was not charging sufficiently. When doing this test, the lights should be the only load (turn the stereo, a/c and other accessories off). With a heavy load, an otherwise good alternator may not be able to produce sufficient amounts of current at idle. *
