I have a stock as a rock Silvia S13 coming to me in January, i just want to know what i can and cant do to it. It comes with a BOV, Exhaust and adjustable suspension, its a CA8DET engine so i want to do a couple of mods like, Intercooler, pod filter, and couple of other minor mods to get around on P's. Any inforamtion would be Super!! I know the legal lime its 100mm off ground so my car will be 105 (im heavy tongue.gif)..
poopra
1. Atmospheric BOV is illegal.
2. Open air filter (i.e. pod filter) with the combination of an intercooler is illegal. (anyone care to clarify?)
3. Loud exhausts may pass noise emmission testing, but on your P plates, its kinda asking for trouble.
Soarer Kid
Exhaust is nothing speical, BOV i will try and sweet talk my way out of it. My car was a Q model (on turb auto) and has been converted into a K model. Is it expensive to change to 5 stud wheels or should i keep it at four.
Soarer Kid
This is it, do u think its noticable ???

Well you can definitely see that it's an atmospheric venting BOV.

As for 5 stud conversion, its not hard at all if you have the parts. Plenty of import places (or if you know someone in Japan, you could bid for them) have 5 stud hub conversions. Simply take off your hub, replace with 5 stud hub and presto. 5 stud. Not much point though? Easy to find wheels in the Silvia offset.
Soarer Kid
thnks for the awsome advise, are there any BOV's that dont hurt nature coz im all up for that.... What is a Sequential BOV? How can u tell that this is a atmospheric venting BOV? I gotta clean that dirty engine...
poopra
It looks like a blitz BOV. You can tell its a venting because it does not have a hose plumbing it back into the intake tract. A plumback BOV is legal as it plumbs back into the intact tract between the AFM and the turbo and as thus, recycles metered air. Otherwise, in the case of a venting BOV, the engine thinks that the air is still in the system, but is vented into the atmosphere, hence running pig rich during gearchanges and belching a dirty great big cloud of black smoke and can result in a huge backfire.

Basic principle of sequential BOV is the same. Releases built up pressure during off throttle instances, but it is more sensitive and can vent at very low boost.

Hope this all makes sense.

And always have good tread.. 1st thing ive noticed when in cars and getting pulled over is they check the easy spots.. Tyres/Lights/Interior(missing seats)

Only takes 3(?) offenses to warrant a defect.. and you dont want that on the 1st day of your P's smile.gif
poopra
And be courteous. A cop that has had a bad day is just waiting for someone to smart mouth him biggrin.gif
Soarer Kid
Yeah thats all good my car is going to be street legal..ish. Where abouts are u from Mr Supra, i wanna race you some time (legal) biggrin.gif
poopra
Bulleen/Templestowe-ish area. And no... I don't street race.

i am an apprentice mechanic and i was reading the plumb back bov are also illeagle due to the fact that the air the bov puts back into the system causes the car to fuel up and screw the emmisions up ya just cant win can ya
poopra
Well, they certainly pass a multitude of factory turbo cars that come with a stock plumb back BOV through emissions testing eh?

well dude.. as stated above.. EVERY CAR that is production must meet these regulations... so i mean ey... they still might run rich.. but it SHOULDNT

\

look @ this

say u have 1 part fuel to 20 parts air

1:20

so... if u take away (vent) 1 part of air.. this mixture richen.. making more chance for unburnt fuel to escape and cause backfire and cause emission problems...

so instead of it being 1:20.. it becomes 1:19... or even richer depening on your tune and boost levels
so.. redicting this air.. back will infact not screw wath air fuel settings...

in a couple words

im sorry: Your wrong...

but ur appretice... its ok... if u were full mechanic... or something... meehh... lets not go there...

anyone know if racing seats are legal? like a neat proper saas one?
poopra
Should be a sticker attached to the seat. As far as I know, most (if not all) jap branded seats are not legal. The SAAS seats might be, if they have an ADR approved sticker somewhere.
RdS:
cheers mate, ill go looking at the seats tomorrow. wink.gif

btw, does anyone know the SAAS website?? or anything about the company? i cant find it. sad.gif

not long till i get my car biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif so im going to have to put a new BOV on or just get rid of it ? Do i put just a normal pipe there instead ?

CA's didn't come with a BOV standard. So you can put a straight pipe there if you want. You can also get a plumb-back one and try feed it back into the intake piping. Or you could just leave this one on biggrin.gif You asked for whats legal and whats not; I told you. What you want to do to your own car is your discretion.. Have fun with it
Soarer Kid
Thanks for all the help i will decide when i get it. New question does anybody know anything about the temporary registery liscence ? Like have any of you needed it to get ur car and how much did it cost ? I have looked on VicRoads and it says depends on how long you need it for.

Your BOV is illegal, and will make your car run like shit.
Get a new 3" turbo back exhaust system in mild steel.
Get your coilovers checked to see if they're leaking or need a rebuild.

You can have either a front mount intercooler, or a pod filter. In VIC you are only allowed 1 intake modification.

As he said, a pod is illegal if you modify your intercooler.

If you really want to get a better IC, get an ARC sidemount, it's much thicker and flows a lot better, and the cops wont know it's there.

Get a mild steel exhaust, none of that stainless steel shit, mild steel is thicker, and absorbs a lot of the sound, whereas stainless steel just resonates, and sometimes creates a horrible exhaust tone, mild steel will last longer than the car, so don't get fooled into buying stainless.

They won't care, you'll get defected.

5 stud conversion
Front:
S14 spindles+hubs
R32/S14/S15 balljoints pressed into the stock s13 lower control arms (or just use s14/s15 LCAs)
Redrill stock discs to 5stud (most people upgrade to 4pot brakes at the same time though - that just involves discs, calipers and pads)

Rear:
R32 GTS-t / S14 hubs
redrill rear discs to 5stud

Though I don't really see any point doing that, theres plenty of info and how-to's if you need to do it.

Recaro and Velo seats are ADR approved as long as you get the ADR approved rails.
I'm not sure about SAAS. But even if you get an ADR approved seat, the rail is the thing you need to be worried about.

When you get your car, don't worry about modifying it, just get a full service, change all the fluids, oils, belts, compression/leakdown test, flush out all your intake piping (maybe get a catch can), check your O2 sensor (get a new one if you have to), just make sure it is all running fine. Then start modifying when you're not satisfied with the performance.

There's plenty of bolt ons that you can do, it just depends how you want to go about it.

The stock t25 on a ca18det isn't a very great turbo, get a t28bb or at least a t28 from an s14/15, that should bolt on after modifying water and oil lines.
If you're going to get a front mount, paint it black.
Remove the atmo venting BOV and get a plumbback one installed.

There's lots of ways to go about modifying your car, if I was you (and I was 6 months ago tongue.gif), keep the engine bay looking as stock as possible, so if you do get pulled over, the cops t wont find anything bad.
Soarer Kid
WOW thanks tharaka u truley know your shit! You cleared everything i need to know up + more. *bows down* thanks Car God.
tharaka
lol

that's pretty much the basic shit that i've been through with my old car
same questions

i just went and found out the proper answers, rather than listening to peoples opinions on what they 'think' is right and wrong

Like Tharaka said, thats the best way you can approach modding your car. Don't ever take what anyone says for gospel. Research for yourself, borrow some books even on car modding... you'll be suprised how much shit is dribbled out of so called forum experts.

Nothing better also than to learn to do it yourself biggrin.gif That way, you gain confidence in being able to take apart your car and put it back together.. Like I can. 2 years ago I knew jack. Now, I have gone through an engine conversion myself, helped a few mates do theirs, in the process of sussing out 4 piston calipers conversion etc etc...

Good luck dude thumbsup.gif
Soarer Kid
Well im doing my Certificate in Automotive Engineering atm through school and i have learnt a few things from that. Now i just have to apply them to my car. Again, i would like to thank everyone who had a comment worth reading.

i was at myer the other day and they were playing a best motoring dvd (go figure) they were doing to a s13 wat u were doing so perhaps track down a copy of that.

yeah but Compared to QLD and WA we have it very harsh. A mate of mine is putting an RB25DET into his Silvia and he will still be able to drive it on the road...

yeah, but they have to put up with living in qld and wa bowrofl.gif

LOL good call wouldnt mind the laws to be a little loser i just wish people wernt so damn stupid on the roads. Kids ruining it for all of us, not to mension the curfue the police/government want to put on us.
180sxc
Wait till the hoon plates get released the police will hand em out like free candy to anyone with a modified car (just like canaries and EPA's) even if they werent doin any "hooning".

If you guys are worried bout BOV's u should wait for the release of the GFB Deceptor Pro BOV, it alows you to swtch to plumback mode from inside the car, unlike the stealth FX BOV were u had to get out of the car, open the hood and twist the head of the bov.
Soarer Kid
do u have a url or anything with more info on this new BOV ? sounds cool what are "hoon" plates any way how di u get them and what do they mean/do?
live_1991
hoon plates are not happing, it was just hypy up by the media and scared car drivers tongue.gif

mmm this bov sounds good

also RB25DET into his Silvia cart you do that if you get Engineered ???
Soarer Kid
no idea but wouldnt power to weight be shot ? 300kw/1200kg's hehehe my friend is in WA and they dont have any laws on power/weight and are alot lighter on mods that u do to ur car. He will be bringing his car over here soon. I CANT WAIT !!!

yeah, does anyone know the real reason as to why this is illegal?
its not like the pod gives u much more power
poopra
Pretty sure its EPA wise. Noise pollution. When you get a car engineered (engine conversion and such), one of the things tested is induction noise.
300ZX Boy- RMBRME
Power to weight they say. I was thinking how good it is to live in vic to have such good laws. Isurance companies were giving me the ok and thumbs up. Until one day i went to vicroads and shattered my dreams. i told them i was looking at 300zx, skyline, {xr6 turbo which weighs 1700kg} and they told me i was dreaming all those cars are banned. i thought what a load of crap so i asked some of my dads copper friends and one said that every p plater that drives an ilegal vehicle and registers them under mummy and daddys name that he finds, he severly fines them and arranges a court appearance. In your case its best to do what the others said and service replace any stuff and get used the car. Remember to have fun but keep mods simple especially on ur ps because when they do pull u over they will find those mods because thet arent dum thats there job. See u around and would like to drag u with my ba xr6 (legal) thumbsup.gif
Soarer Kid
ohhh we might have enough people to have a legal drag night down at caulder with this rate LOL XR6 will kinda kill me! Thanks for the info and first thing ill do is give all the parts a good cleaning change oil give car a clean see any nasties it has and fix em up in class. biggrin.gif If any 1 else has Legal questions post-em its better to be in the right then having your car impounded or liscence removed.

epa - emissions
i never really understood the reason for that, but im sure they had a good one
in nsw pod and open filter is illegal for noise reasons

you have about 100rwkw (if youre lucky) stock
Soarer Kid
LOL yeah i thought so when i get silvia ill dyno it i think it will produce 120-130kw it weighs 1120kg or something and sits at 130mm off the ground. Tharaka u wouldnt happen to know how high your ride can be off the road? I am getting told 100 and getting told 50-60mm any1 care to clean this up?
poopra
100mm from the lowest point of your car.
tharaka
100mm is gay and undriveable
Soarer Kid
So thats a no ? Eventually i want it to be a show car so its gonna be low and drivable what good way to tuck in the 17's im gonna fit and also not lose my body kit on the driveway...
