Hi guys,

A family member of mine is due to get her 2005 Holden Barina serviced in a few days and it's done 35,500km. She gets it done at her Holden dealership and they are telling her it is due for a timing belt change.

Does this sound right or is it a bit premature and they're ripping her off? I think it's done low mileage for a car of that age and shouldn't need it.

Cheers...

They say to do a t-belt by holden is either every 90000km or every 5 years which ever comes first
the t-belt dose become brittle with age

Maybe check the cars service/log book, it often says what needs to be done and when.

Personally that seems like a really short distance and time to be replacing a timing belt. If you're not bound by warranty, then I'd be waiting a while before getting it done. Most belts have at least 70k life, some significantly more than that. 35k seems quite low.

For Holden to do it, I'd be guessing it's around a grand, so not a small amount.

Cheers guys. The one in my Rexy gets changed every 50,000km so I was thinking it was a rort they were trying to pull on her.

The car has been a drama for her, the paint job was of very low quality and has deteriorated badly despite having that Minc protection, getting it fixed through warranty wasn't easy.

I'm going to try and convince her to go through another workshop for her servicing, she is just worried that it would affect her warranty.

if the 05 barina is anything like the astras and vectras they're due at 60 000 or every 5 years like others have said. regardless of the km's its not wise to opt out of a timing belt. make sure you get the full kit done as well (seals, tensioners, idlers) as these can fail and cause leaks, or engine damage. try getting a couple of quotes as dealerships can be quite expensive for that kind of work.

Enjoy ownership of the Alfetta for as long as you can, it'll mean you won't find out servicing costs of a newer car. Timing belt service will be in the vicinity of $800+.

I was thinking the same things, and again if they're anything like the Astras, I'd be doing it much sooner than later. Plenty of horror stories of persons who've broken belts and subsequently engines. Especially when Holden had the change listed for 120,000km.

Wow that's expensive, just to change a timing belt. But as others have said its not something you want to skimp on.

never skim on timing belts!

They are time limited too as mentioned 5 years.

alot of people suggest a water pump change on FWD cars due to the fact you need to remove the timing belt to change a water pump its called preventative maint. thou i never did and got 280,000 out of the one in my mirage

change the crank and cam seals to they only cost $30ish and same reason as above.

I know citroens are every 4 years or 100k.

Time or mileage basis, they can get stress cracks being rubber. Id do it to be on the safe side.

mmmm but a stitch in time saves 9.... some people will be lucky and get 300k out of a water pump. i've seen new cars with water pumps weeping... and if you pay to get a timing belt kit done... then you may as well spend the extra hundred or so and get the water pump done at the same time.... not worth paying to get everything stripped back off again to get to the pump later.

lol we had a mitsubishi express van come in once with over 400k on the clock... the timing belt looked to be original, was splitting and frayed in places and some teeth looked to be barely holding on but the old girl was still running smile.gif (i am not saying to leave yours 400k though. lol just simply saying that some people will be lucky. euro holdens are not lucky)

This.

We replace waterpumps almost every time we do a timing belt, some of those cars havent even hit 50,000 yet :|

Oh how I love my timing chain and non-interference engine right about now. None of this 30k bullshit, lasts over 100 without any stressing.
