If you're driving your Honda Civic and you accelerate but the car revs but you aren't going any faster, then you're having troubles with your automatic transmission.

Here's a good example of what it's all about:

Unfortunately, it's a very common problem with Honda's between '99 and '04. In fact, more than half of the effected Honda model's in this era experience transmission failure before 100,000k's on the odometre.

Some say that if you have a Honda between this five years and haven't experience such problems, then you are one lucky son of a bitch and should probably go and buy a lotto ticket.

The common symptoms of impending transmission failure is leaking transmission fluid (check the ground where you regularly park your car), followed by slippage like what's shown in the video above, followed by the impending doom with the car simply not going anywhere despite selecting drive when you start it up one morning and need to get somewhere in a hurry.

If you own a Honda in this era of '99-'04, then the best advice I can give to extend the life of the automatic transmission by making sure you always come to a complete stop when shifting to reverse or park.

But, once complete failure happens, you're probably better off flogging off the car to wreckers and buying a new one, rather than replacing the torque converter, etc, at a cost of typically $2k.

Ford Falcons from BA model and up, also had such trannie problems, caused by moisture entering gearbox and softening the Adhesives on the "bands" - literally the planetary gear brake ... more like a smaller disc brake pad in looks... stupid idea - probably done with deliberate intent to Eff-Up the box, so that you can spend $4000 to $8000 to overhaul it at a Ford dealer... I would avoid that and Fords of all models, altogether for this reason.
