EDIT: I have a new problem, the car won't fire when it is hot. It will turn over but won't start. It starts fine when cold.

The coil was replaced last weekend with a Bosch GT40r(or something similar) & a universal ballist(spelling) resistor. Any ideas? Will I need a resistor that is more suited to the coil? Or could it be a complete different problem?

Thanks again

Hey guys,
Ive got a 1985 hilux which is giving me problems.

For the past week it has been misfiring at low rev range, which was driveable. On thursday it became really bad to the point of being undriveable. When its cold it drives fine, once hot it will cough, misfire, shake & backfire.

I took it to a reputable toyota dealership on the coast as it was the first mechanic i happened to pass, left it with them overnight. They replaced points, leads, plugs etc. & i was charged $195 & told the car runs perfect again (i'm geussing they test drove it cold). So i drove away, car warmed up & did the exact thing it was doing before i took it there. I managed to get it back to them with a slow, whiplashing drive back. I took one of the mechanics for a drive & he now thinks the problem is with the fuel. They're closed over the weekend & can't look at it until monday now.

I'm just wondering if there is any ideas of what the problem is so i can try & get a rough price in my head because as you can tell by the car i drive, second year isn't exactly the highest paying job. Haha

Thanks.

sounds like the transition valve in the carby is blocked basically strip and rebuid carb and its all good quite common
the main reason people change to weber carbs or try and buy 2nd hand carbs all the time

Thanks guys. I already had a weber carb on it.

Was told the weber needed a rebuild, I ended up gettin a second hand one with a manifold, air filter etc. for $170 (much cheaper than the $650 I was quoted by the mechanic to have it sent away, labour etc). Swapped it over, ran fine until the car was under heavy load. Turns out they only cleaned the spark plugs & didn't replace them, they were rooted. Replaced the spark plugs & got a new coilpack. Runs fine now.

So, if anyone wants a cheap weber that needs a rebuild, let me know tongue.gif
